8 Christmas Cocktail Ideas

Sure, it may be hot outside at Christmastime. You’re definitely not freezing like your friends in the UK. In fact, you’re more likely to be found around the pool than around the Christmas tree, and yes: it’s not about the turkey, but about the barbeque. This doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a little Northern-hemisphere charm. If you want to give a traditional slant to your summer Christmas party, how about trying out some of these delicious winter-inspired cocktails?

Mulled Wine Sangria

It’s rich, spicy and satisfying. But isn’t it a little too much for summer? Not so! Give a festive slant to the traditional sangria by chilling some mulled wine. Simply simmer a bottle of red in a pan with cognac, sugar, cinnamon, clove, vanilla, orange and lemon. Chill overnight – and then give it the sangria treatment through refreshing lashes of cold ginger ale!

Hot Buttered Rum

This is great for kicking off those intimate Christmas parties-for-two. Take 60ml of dark rum, and pour it into the bottom of a sturdy glass, adding lemon peel and cinnamon.  Fill the glass with hot water and top it all off with a knob of butter. It’s rich, warming and highly intoxicating.

Eggnog

No list of Christmas cocktails is complete without the perennially-loved eggnog. This rich drink can work well as a dessert on its own. It can easily be prepared without the alcohol, making it a great treat for kids and non-drinkers. The decadent combination of eggs, sugar, brandy, rum, vanilla, nutmeg and heaps of whipped cream is tough to resist. It’s the ideal indulgence for a time when your waistline should be the last thing on your mind.

Christmas Cookie

Despite its unassuming name, this little cocktail packs a big punch. The recipe makes it the perfect after-dinner drink, and is flexible enough to accommodate a host of delicious variations. The traditional recipe involves equal parts peppermint schnapps, Kahlua and Bailey’s Irish Cream.

Chocolate Raspberry Martini

This is as good as it sounds. Combine 45ml of raspberry vodka with 30ml of white crème de cacao. Shake thoroughly with lots of ice and serve in a sexy martini glass. For a bit of extra flair and flavour, rim the martini glass with sweet cocoa powder before pouring.

Red Hot Santatini

Sticking to martini variations, this is potent innovation that will really cause a stir (or a shake?) at your next Christmas party. It’s the thrilling combination of chilli-infused vodka, Godiva chocolate liqueur, cocoa powder, cayenne pepper and whipped cream. It marks the unique harmony between chilli and chocolate – something that the ancient Aztecs firmly believed in. You definitely need to try it to believe it.

Poinsettia

Looking for something on the lighter side? How about going for an easy-drinking sparkling wine cocktail? This classy and festive drink combines sparling white wine with 15ml of Cointreau and 90ml cranberry juice. It works well when served in a flute glass, and can be enjoyed before or after the meal.

Do you want to add a little stylish flair to your next Christmas party? These cocktails perfectly merge traditional flavours with an innovative, sexy edge. It’s time to put down that boring summer beer and get mixing!
